THE FREE DEMOCRATS OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Free Democrats of South Africa were founded in 2019 by Dr. Johan Reid, a Cape Town-based neurologist who also serves as the party’s chairman. Formed in response to ANC-led corruption and economic decline, the Free Democrats advocate for smaller, more efficient government, lower taxes, free-market policies, and individual freedom. Our priorities include privatizing healthcare and education, scrapping restrictive labor laws, boosting investment and job creation, and protecting property and human rights. We wholly believe that prosperity will come from empowering individuals, not expanding state control.

WHY THE FREE DEMS

Healthcare has been a persistent issue in South Africa since 1994, with the government focusing on socialist policies rather than providing quality healthcare. The Free Democrats propose the following solutions:

  1. Private Healthcare: Citizens should have access to private healthcare, with one comprehensive medical aid plan from birth to death, funded by a Health Insurance Fund (HIF). The HIF would be funded by existing sin taxes (tobacco, alcohol, gambling, sugar, carbon taxes) and a portion of VAT, ensuring everyone contributes without new taxes.

  2. Improved Medical Aid: Eliminate ineffective medical aid plans, with private companies administering plans and hospitals charging set tariffs determined by Parliament.

  3. Private Hospital Management: Hospitals should be managed by private health companies and be equipped to claim from medical aids.

  4. Government Oversight: Parliament will oversee the HIF and set fees for healthcare professionals.

The party offers a choice: continue with the current, inefficient state-run healthcare system, or vote for private healthcare, economic freedom, lower taxes, and job creation.

The Free Democrats propose several reforms to improve South Africa’s economy and governance:

  1. Merit-Based System: Reward merit, not political loyalty, and encourage business and investment by reducing taxes, removing restrictive labor laws, and cutting red tape.
  2. Privatization: Privatize state-owned enterprises like Eskom and SAA, as well as healthcare and education.
  3. Tax Cuts and Reforms: Lower taxes for businesses and individuals, broaden the tax base, and offer incentives to hire qualified workers. Reduce company tax to 15%, personal income tax to 35%, and dividend tax to 10%. Increase tax exemptions for those earning below R300,000 and encourage saving.
  4. Labor and Union Reforms: Scrap race-based labor laws, stop payroll deductions for union contributions, and incentivize companies to hire skilled employees.
  5. Encourage Homeownership: Provide tax breaks for maintenance and make all related property expenses deductible.
  6. Energy and Clean Tech: Offer tax incentives for clean energy production and encourage industries to meet their own energy needs.
  7. Government and Administrative Reforms: Eliminate wasteful government boards, and replace the Road Accident Fund with compulsory third-party insurance handled by private companies.
  8. Equity Participation: Introduce employee ownership programs and encourage South Africans abroad to return with tax incentives.
  9. Incentivize Hard Work: Stop punitive taxes and instead reward hard work and commitment with tax breaks.

These measures aim to create a free economy, reduce government interference, and foster job creation, prosperity, and growth.

The Free Democrats propose several key measures to address unemployment and stimulate job creation in South Africa:

  1. Tax Cuts for Investment: They advocate for significant tax reductions to attract local and foreign investment, which is crucial for job creation. The party highlights that job creation comes from investors, not the government, and criticizes the ANC for destroying millions of jobs.

  2. Labor and Red Tape Reforms: The party calls for the elimination of restrictive and race-based labor laws and a reduction in red tape to create a more business-friendly environment that encourages investment.

  3. Expanded National/Community Service: They propose extending national/community service to university and college graduates, offering them immediate employment opportunities, especially in municipalities and city councils that need skills.

  4. Graduate Placement in Local Government: Financial management and accounting graduates should be seconded to local governments to address skills shortages and provide employment right after graduation.

  5. Youth Employment: The Free Democrats aim to improve the employment prospects for South Africa’s youth, focusing on creating opportunities and equipping them with necessary skills.

These measures are designed to foster job creation, particularly for the youth, by improving the business environment and providing immediate opportunities for graduates.

As a party of workable and practical solutions, the Free Democrats of South Africa propose the following solutions in order to restore law and order in South Africa

  • Immigration Policy & Foreign Worker Regulations – Implement a settlement or visa fee for all foreign nationals in South Africa, ranging from R50,000 to R100,000 per person annually. Employers covering this fee for essential foreign workers should be allowed to deduct it as a business expense.

  • Human Rights & Governance – Ensure that all policies respect individual human rights while maintaining national interests and enforcing necessary regulations.

  • Defense & Law Enforcement Reform – Restructure the National Defence Force into a more efficient and purpose-driven professional military. Decentralize the South African Police Service (SAPS), giving provincial governments greater control over law enforcement to improve efficiency and accountability.

  • National Data Integration & Security – Expand South Africa’s national database by cross-referencing biometric data, ID numbers, tax records, and medical aid numbers with the voter’s roll to enhance identification, security, and governance.

  • Restoring the Rule of Law & Fighting Corruption – Strengthen legal and financial oversight to recover billions in stolen public funds that have been captured and hidden abroad, ensuring accountability for corruption.

  • Welfare & Social Responsibility – Reform social grant policies to discourage reliance on government handouts without contribution. Make welfare support conditional on active participation in adult education and training programs. Reduce public spending on those who refuse to contribute productively to society.

THE LIBERTARIAN VISION

Join the Free Democrats and help build a smarter, freer South Africa—one with lower taxes, less waste, and real choice in healthcare. We believe you should keep more of what you earn and decide how to care for your own health, not leave it to state-run chaos. If you’re tired of bloated bureaucracy and broken promises, and desire a fully tax funded medical aid free at point of delivery, you’re exactly who we need. Let’s fix this—together.

MORE ABOUT WHY US:

Are you tired of funding luxury lifestyles for bloated bureaucrats, their cronies, and their ever-growing entourage of freeloaders? Are you sick of standing in endless queues at crumbling state hospitals, wondering whether you’ll need to bring your own bed linen and a Spanish interpreter? Well, so are we.

The Free Democrats of South Africa aren’t career politicians fattened on your tax rands. We’re the people who still believe hard work should be rewarded, not punished. We want lower taxes, better jobs, world-class healthcare, real service delivery — and most of all, to finally kick the bumbling ANC (and their wannabe copycats) off the gravy train.

Free Democrats of South Africa, The Last Grown-Ups in the Room:

Tired of working harder just to fund another round of looting by political parasites? Had enough of potholes so deep they have their own ecosystems, state hospitals that double as horror movie sets, and power cuts that make medieval times look progressive? Good news: the Free Democrats are here, and we don’t want to run your life — we want to get out of it.

The Free Democrats believe in what used to be called “common sense” before the ANC and their bumbling sidekicks made everything a cash grab. Less government, lower taxes, actual job creation (by businesses, not government cronies), and healthcare that doesn’t involve rats, linen shortages, and an early funeral. we want every South African to have proper medical aid — funded without bleeding you dry with new taxes — and to kick the utterly useless state out of healthcare once and for all.

Our blueprint is simple: cut the red tape, kill the Mickey Mouse taxes and race-based nonsense strangling business, privatize the disaster zones we call SOEs, sell unused state land to pay off the Everest-sized debt, and reward hard work, not political connections. Oh, and if you’re a foreigner who wants to stay? Pay your way or kindly show yourself out.

Vote Free Democrats of South Africa. Because you’ve waited long enough for Godot — and for the ANC to get their act together. (Spoiler: they won’t.)
