FREE DEMS REQUIREMENTS
To apply for membership in the Free Democrats of South Africa, an individual must:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Be 18 years or older.
- Hold a valid South African ID number.
- Not be a current member of a political party with policies fundamentally opposed to the Free Democrats’ values (e.g., parties advocating for communism, socialism, or racial quotas).
Applicants must agree to uphold and support the following core principles of the Free Democrats:
- Liberty and individual freedom: Belief in personal responsibility, voluntary association, and freedom of choice.
- Free market economy: Support for privatization, free enterprise, and reduced government interference.
- Low taxes and limited government: Advocacy for a state that governs less and taxes less.
- Merit over identity: Opposition to BEE and any race-based policies; support for a society that rewards merit, skill, and contribution.
- Rule of law and constitutional democracy: Respect for South Africa’s Constitution, courts, and individual rights.
- Property rights: Respect and protection of private ownership.
- Healthcare and education freedom: Support for private medical aid for all citizens and encouragement of private, merit-based education.
- Sovereign debt reduction: Support for responsible fiscal policy and reduction of government debt.
Applicants must:
- Be of good character and not have a record of serious corruption, fraud, or abuse of public trust.
- Affirm that they have not participated in or benefited from state capture, looting, or corrupt political structures.
Be committed to non-violence, peaceful political activity, and constructive public discourse.
The party encourages applicants who:
- Are active taxpayers or intend to become so;
- Support the principle of compulsory community service for graduates (in line with party proposals);
Advocate for personal development, continuous learning, and skills transfer.
All applicants must:
- Sign a Declaration of Support, affirming that they:
- Support the registration and success of the Free Democrats of South Africa;
- Consent to the use of their personal details (e.g., ID number) for party verification with the IEC, in compliance with POPIA;
- Understand that membership may be revoked if they act in ways that violate the party’s core principles.
The following individuals are not eligible:
- Current or former public officials found guilty of maladministration, corruption, or human rights violations;
- Members of organisations advocating for state socialism, racial quotas, or anti-democratic ideologies;
- Individuals with pending criminal charges involving dishonesty or violence, unless and until cleared.
